Mace and “Julie” are teenage boys growing up in an era that demonized them for being their true selves gay. The two meet, in 1938, at a military training camp for young men. They fall in love, but World War II interrupts their blossoming relationship.
While Mace leaves Arizona for the European front, Julie stays behind after being exempt from service due to an injury. Soon, Mace is overwhelmed by the war’s brutality and stops responding to Julie’s heartfelt letters. Without word from Mace, Julie assumes the worst—Mace is dead.
Both men eventually find other loves. Mace falls for Gage, another soldier, while Julie moves to New York’s Upper Eastside and starts his own new relationship. Near the end of the war, Mace is dishonorably discharged for being a homosexual; he loses all GI Bill benefits and returns to the United States, fortunate to be reunited with his partner. He and Gage settle into an apartment in Greenwich Village, looking forward to a new and better life.
Soon, the small world of Greenwich Village throws Mace and Julie together and an unexpected tragedy brings the two former lovers closer than ever. As Julie nurses Mace through his grief and the pain of post-traumatic stress, Mace’s love for Julie begins anew. Will Mace discover that first loves can be the strongest and last a lifetime?

Excellent story. Made me laugh and cry. I ended up loving the main characters. There were many interesting twists and turns of the book.
A story of gay people in WW2 that somehow does not completely satisfy. It's well written and it flows easily, but the characters are too stereotypical, the situations not always credible and the outvome of the story more like a fairytale (no double meaning). Easy to read and easy to forget. The best part the description of the horrible treatment of gay men by the U.S. army
